Why children should drink plenty of water

In our article, we explain why and how much water is important for children. You can also find out how best to motivate children to drink a lot.

Smart people drink smart - with enough water! Our body consists of almost 65% water - in children and adolescents it is even up to 75%. Adequate fluid intake ensures that your brain can work optimally. Not only does it help with concentration and alertness, it also helps to boost memory and creativity. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to fatigue, headaches and impaired cognitive function.

 

Shortly before the start of school, it's time again to ensure that all pupils and students have enough energy and stamina to get through the school day, so it's important to drink enough water to maintain concentration and performance. How much should children and adults actually drink?

Water requirements vary depending on age and activity level. The German Nutrition Society recommends the following daily amounts to drink depending on the age group:

up to 3-year-olds about 820 ml

4 to 6-year-olds approx. 940 ml

7- to 9-year-olds approx. 970 ml

10- to 12-year-olds approx. 1.170 ml

13- to 14-year-olds approx. 1.330 ml

15 to 19-year-olds around 1.530 ml

20 to 24-year-olds approx. 1.470 ml

25 to 50-year-olds about 1.410 ml

51- to 64-year-olds approx. 1.230 ml

65-year-olds and older approx. 1.310 ml

Pregnant women approx. 1470 ml Breastfeeding women approx. 1710 ml

These are only recommendations and it should be noted that the more physical or mental activity we do and the hotter the temperatures, the more water we need. In most cases, this means that we need even more water, often up to 2.5 litres a day.
